Introductions
Mark opened the meeting by asking everyone to introduce themselves.

SHAC Mission / SHS Mission/Goals/Vision and Student Affairs Strategic Plan The SHAC Mission was passed out and the charge of the committee was reviewed. Committee members were also given a copy of the SHS Mission/Goals/Vision and the Student Affairs Strategic Plan Objectives that involve SHS.

Dr. Murray shared with the group that SHS has been accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) since 1995. There are over 70 staff with about 50 who are full-time. SHS faces increasing challenges with the State budget crisis. Last year $250,000 cut from budget. In the 1980s-1990s registration fees paid about 80% of the SHS budget, in 2001 it decreased to 50%, and in 2003 only 35%.

SHAC Issues: Mark opened the floor for discussion on issues that members were interested in having SHAC focus on this year. The following possible SHAC issues and areas of focus were mentioned/discussed:

  • Decreasing wait time (it was explained that new appointment system was implemented to address this, maybe we should evaluate success of new system)
  • Increase times available for immunization (As of this pass Fall quarter Nurses clinic has extended their hours for immunizations)
  • Dentist at SHS (SHS used to have a dentist on site, but it cost too much, which financially jeopardized other services)
  • Change in hours to be open later
  • Weekend appointments
  • Health Line Phone/Ask a Nurse

During the discussion of these issues, Dr. Murray explained that in these times of fiscal vigilance, any increase in staff time or new service means deciding what we are willing to give up.
