Introductions:
Mark opened the meeting with introductions. He explained that the main focus of the meeting would be on the College Council presentations, but that we would wait for Lupe to join us at 10:30 to begin that discussion.
Spring 2004 survey results:
Debbie reviewed the SHAC survey administered last spring. In the review she recalled the rationale for it, saying that many SHAC members expressed the concern that students did not realize that all students could utilize the Student Health Center. The questions on the survey were also designed to inform students of some new web-based services provided by SHS. A user survey (for those that had been to Student Health) was administered, as well as a non-user survey for those that had never been to SHS. 143 students filled out a survey, of those 104 were users, and 39 students had never been to SHS. Of the 104 respondents, 82% rated their experience at SHS as 7 or above on a scale of 1-10. Of the non-users 6 had a negative comment that they had heard about SHS, although many were false, such as "SHS only has young doctors with little experience". Of all respondents, approximately 1/3 did not know that all students (regardless of insurance) are eligible to be seen at SHS.
SHS Incoming Student Info Sheet/UCI Guide to Health and Help:
The SHS Incoming Student Info Sheet was distributed. This form was developed over Summer 2004 in response to the SHAC suggestion last year that all new freshmen receive something from SHS with important info and emergency numbers. UCI's comprehensive Guide to Health and Safety was also shared. More discussion and expansion of the UCSD-SHS info sheet will be the focus of the next meeting in the winter quarter.
UCAB Meeting report/College Council presentations:
SHAC members were updated on the UCAB presentation, regarding the elimination of tobacco sales on campus. UCSD is currently one of only three UCs that still sell tobacco on campus. After some discussion it was decided that the next step would be to have a presentation to each of the college councils to request their support and a resolution. Lupe will work with SHAC members, the C.O.U.G.H. campaign students and the ATOD student group to plan each college council presentation.
Next Meeting:
Mark asked members to send their winter schedules to him or Debbie, and they will try to come up with a date/time in winter quarter that works for everyone. The first meeting will most likely be around week 4.
If you wish to contact a member of SHAC, email studenthealth@ucsd.edu and your message will be forwarded. Your comments and suggestions are most welcome.
