Body Composition Analysis

Body Composition Analysis is offered during Fall, Winter and Spring quarters only.

Student Health Service now has a Tanita Body Composition Analyzer (BCA). Utilizing bioelectrical impedance analysis, this machine calculates a person's percentage of body fat. High body fat percentage is directly correlated with increased risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

We are now offering students the opportunity to have their body fat percentage* measured using the Body Composition Analyzer. The test requires you to stand barefoot (in light clothing) on a scale. The testing process takes approximately ten minutes to complete. You will receive a computer generated analysis with the following information: body weight, body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat, calculated basal metabolic rate (BMR), fat mass, fat-free mass, and total body water. You will be given a sheet that defines the results and you will have a chance to ask the Registered Dietitian any questions you might have regarding the results.

Body Composition Analysis - $10 for all students

Important! To improve the accuracy of the test, proper protocol must be followed. Please schedule a time when you can adhere to the following recommendations:

  • No alcohol 48 hours before the test.
  • Avoid intense exercise 12 hours before the test.
  • Avoid eating or drinking (especially caffeine) 4 hours before the test.
  • Empty your bladder 30 minutes before the test.
  • Avoid all diuretic medications for 7 days before the test (only if possible).
  • Test at least 3 hours after waking.
  • Pre-menstrual women may retain fluid, which can affect the outcome of the test.

To monitor progress in changing body composition, long-term results can be reliably measured at 3-4 week intervals.

*Body-fat testing using skinfold calipers is still available FREE through Fit Stop at RIMAC.
