Emergency Contraceptive Pill

You may now purchase ECP without a prescription at the SHS Pharmacy.

The Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP), previously called the Morning After Pill, is a method of preventing a pregnancy from occurring after an incident of unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. Studies show ECPs greatly reduce the chance of pregnancy by delaying ovulation, preventing fertilization, and by interfering with the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterine lining. The pills have shown to be effective up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected intercourse. To be most effective, the pills should be started within 12 hours after unprotected intercourse. If you have questions or need advice, come to Student Health or call us at (858) 534-3302 any weekday from 8am-4:30pm (Wed 9am-4:30pm).
