After Hours Nurse Advice Line!
We have an After Hours Nurse Advice Line available. Any time Student Health Services is closed, you can call our regular telephone number (858) 534-3300 and select the option "after hours advice" to speak with a registered nurse who will assist you in obtaining the appropriate care.
Where to go for emergency care after hours
After hours, urgent or emergency medical care is available from urgent care facilities and hospital emergency departments in the nearby community. For UCSD students with SHIP, we recommend the Thornton Hospital Emergency Department to maximize your benefits.
Insurance coverage for after-hours care varies according to the student's health insurance plan. Some plans pay for elective after-hours care while others cover emergencies only.
What to do AFTER an Emergency Room visit
Helpful information "After You've Been to the Emergency Room" about campus resources you may need. Included are: Student Health, SHIP, Deans' Offices, Res Life, Psych & Counseling Services, Disabled Student Services, and Sexual Assault & Violence Prevention.
Insurance Information
The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) covers after-hours care for emergencies only. SHIP requires a written referral from SHS staff for non-emergency care. Follow-up care at an Emergency Room also requires a written referral from SHS staff. A referral from an Emergency Room doctor is not a valid referral. Please refer to the SHIP brochure for plan limitations and exclusions.
