Testing is done on a walk-in basis, first-come, first served. If you have questions or need assistance, call a Health Educator at (858) 534-2419.

The Process

The HIV Rapid Test detects HIV via oral swab; no blood sample is needed. There are two testing rooms contained within the Mobile Bus. Counseling services and further testing will be available for those with preliminary positive results. Results in 20-30 minutes.

To be accurate, individuals must wait 15 minutes after eating, drinking or chewing gum, before the oral swab is administered. Additionally, those individuals who have used an oral care product (mouthwash, toothpaste, professional dental cleaning, etc) must wait 30 minutes to conduct the oral fluid test. In situations where food, drink, gum or oral care products were used and time is an issue, a fingerstick test is an alternative.

Who Should Consider Testing?

  • Persons who may have a sexually transmitted disease
  • Persons sharing needles for any reason
  • Persons who consider themselves at risk
  • Women of childbearing age who are considering pregnancy
  • Transfusion recipients before 1985
  • Hemophiliacs
  • Sexual partners of the above
  • Persons who have intercourse (oral, vaginal, anal) without using a condom for protection.
