Polio

Polio vaccine is an injectable inactivated virus (IPV). It is provided in 0.5 ml pre-filled syringes. It must be injected subcutaneously (beneath the skin with a hypodermic needle). It consists of a mixture of three types of poliovirus that are not live. It promotes immunity to poliovirus by inducing an antibody response.

Potential Adverse Reactions

Limited, local pain, erythema redness) or induration (hardening) at the injection site.

Contra-indications

Not to be given with hypersensitivity to neomycin, streptomycin or polymixin B.

IPV

  • Can interact with immune serum globulin, plasma and whole blood; therefore let the nurse know if you have had a transfusion in the last three months.
  • May decrease the response of a tuberculin skin test. Let the nurse know if you will be needing tuberculin skin testing in the near future.
  • Will not prevent or change polio infection if you have already been exposed. Immunosuppressant medicine may reduce the immune response to the vaccine.
