The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is a comprehensive health plan that provides a full range of medical services, including in/out patient services, specialty care, emergency care, hospitalization and mental health care, as well as dental and pharmacy coverage.
Student Health Service (SHS) is a health care facility that is fully accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. SHS is staffed with licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and other health care professionals. SHS will act as the primary care facility for all students enrolled in SHIP and all care must begin with the Student Health Clinic. A written referral from a Student Health provider is required when obtaining services outside of SHS and while within 100 miles of UCSD, with the exception of emergency care.
A copy of the insurance card can be found on the last page of the SHIP brochure. This card should be carried at all times and presented when accessing medical or dental care.
The UC Regents made health insurance a mandatory non-academic condition for enrollment. To ensure all students have adequate health care coverage and to satisfy the mandatory health insurance requirement, UCSD enrolls and provides SHIP coverage to all registered students.
All students who pay full registration fees are entitled to use SHS, regardless of insurance. However, students who are not enrolled in SHIP may incur additional charges for labs, x-rays and prescriptions. Physician visits and nurse practitioner visits are covered at little or no cost.
